Summary

There was a lot of birding excitement in Region I this spring, courtesy of the state record GYRFALCON in Lubbock and the first SNOWY OWL sighting in Texas in 50 years (Taylor Co). A LEWIS’S WOODPECKER in Taylor County added to the mix.

Spring migration was characterized by lower than expected numbers shorebirds and waders, but good numbers and variety of warblers and other passerines. Drought conditions continued through the area, probably contributing to the low numbers of shorebirds. Temperatures overall were mild, a nice change from the record breaking heat of the last couple of springs.

Rich Kostecke (Llano Estacado Audubon Society, Lubbock) and Rosemary Scott (Panhandle Bird Club, Amarillo) contributed to this report.
