Owls to Flycatchers

Burrowing Owl: (1) 2 January ( Karen Russell) Glen Springs Rd. BBNP (Brewster County).  Previously reported in the park, but never in winter. Most unusual!

Spotted Owl:  A possible Spotted Owl pair was heard hooting near a McKittrick Canyon campsite  in Guadalupe Mountains National Park (Culberson County) on the evening of 17 February (Kelly Cotton).

Northern Long-eared Owl:  (1) 14 December (Kelly Bryan, compiler) Davis Mountains State Park, (Jeff Davis  County) ; (2)  4 January (Tom Vandenberg) Gano Spring, BBNP, (Brewster County)  Rare throughout the Trans Pecos.   

Ruby-throated Hummingbird: (1 immature male)  8-17 December (Kelly Bryan) photographed at private feeders in Fort Davis, (Jeff Davis County)

Black-chinned Hummingbird: (1 male) 14 February (Mark Flippo) Panther Junction, BBNP (Brewster County) Rare this late in winter

Anna’s Hummingbird: (3-4) from November 19 to January 20 (Mark Flippo) Panther Junction, BBNP (Brewster County);  (1) 8 December (Don White) Double Diamond North south of Alpine (Brewster County);  (10)  Recorded around Fort Davis 14 December during the Davis Mountains CBC, (Kelly Bryan, compiler)  (Jeff Davis County); (1) 29 December  (Tom Vandenberg) Rio Grande Village, BBNP (Brewster County); (1 female) 2-14 January (Carolyn Ohl-Kolb) Terlingua Ranch (Brewster County);  (1 male) 24 February (Mark Flippo) Panther Junction, BBNP, (Brewster County)

COSTA’S HUMMINGBIRD: (1 female) 2 January at least through 5 January (Carolyn Ohl-Kolb) Christmas Mountains, Terlingua Ranch (Brewster County)

Broad-tailed Hummingbird: (1 immature male) mid-December through early January (Marc & Maryann Eastman ) Davis Mountain Resort (Jeff Davis County)

“The first returning Broad-tailed Hummingbird arrived back the 28 February.” (Marc & Maryann Eastman)

Rufous Hummingbird: (7) Recorded around Fort Davis 14 December during the Davis Mountains CBC, (Kelly Bryan, compiler)  (Jeff Davis County)

Green Kingfisher: (2m,  f) Throughout December and January (Seen by multiple observers) RGV – Nature Trail, BBNP (Brewster County)

LEWIS’ WOODPECKER: (1) Discovered and reported in downtown Fort Davis in the fall, lingered until at least 13 January (Mark Lockwood, Mark Adams and many other observers) (Jeff Davis County)

Williamson's Sapsucker: (1male) 28 February (Jamie Granger & Brain Cook)  Southwest Rim BBNP, (Brewster County) Uncommon in the Davis Mountains in winter, but accidental in BBNP.)

Gray Flycatcher: (1) 6 February (Mark Flippo) Cottonwood Campground, BBNP, (Brewster County)

Vermilion Flycatcher: (1 male) 28 December (Tom & Carol Hobby) in the yard of Russ Ingram in Limpia Crossing, (Jeff Davis County); (1) 14 December (Kelly Bryan, compiler) Balmorhea CBC  (Reeves County); (1 female and 1 male in separate areas) 22 December Diablo Tank (female) and Diablo Tank 2, McNary Reservoir, (Hudspeth County)

“We have lived in Limpia Crossing since 1995 and have only seen one or two Vermilion Flycatchers in the area.” (Linda Hedges)
