Biannual Meetings
TOS members meet biannually (Spring and Fall) at various locations around Texas. Recent meetings have been held in Galveston, Ft. Davis, Zapata, Lubbock and Beaumont. Local birding groups often host TOS gatherings. Meetings offer many opportunities for participants to enjoy being part of the birding community. TOS events provide an exciting environment in which to advance one's personal and professional goals in ornithology. Birding Field Trips Exciting field trips are organized at every TOS Conference. These trips are led by some of the most knowledgeable birders in Texas. You will meet many stimulating people with similar birding interests and have a chance to bird with some of the state's best birding guides. TOS field trips are one of the most popular aspects of biannual meetings and are generally provided free of charge to TOS members. Workshops and Programs Programs designed to sharpen your observational skills and increase your understanding of ornithology are offered at TOS meetings. TOS workshops and programs are presented by experts in various facets of birding and ornithology. Recent programs have covered subjects as diverse as DNA Testing: The New Taxonomy, The Identification of Wintering Sparrows in Texas, Shorebird Migration, and The Selection and Care of High-quality Optics for Birding. Workshops and programs are provided free of charge to members. Guest Speakers Each TOS meeting is concluded with a Saturday evening banquet and a keynote speaker. Speakers are experts in their field and have achieved national or international recognition. Past speakers have included Pete Dunne (author), Kenn Kaufman (author and tour leader), Pete Meyers (founder of the Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network), Chandler Robbins (coauthor of Birds of North America) and the late Roger Tory Peterson (author and painter). Banquet speakers unite TOS members and the world of ornithology on a national scale and provide for the interchange of ideas. |
