The Early History of Ornithology in Texas Part 1. Birds reported by missionaries and explorers in Texas, 1535-1778 The first recorded observations of Texas bird life was made in 1535 by Cabaza de Vaca, specifically mentioned game birds. From 1535 to 1778, there birds belonging to ten order specifically mentioned in various reports. Not surprisingly, game birds drew the most attention. Part 2. Cultural ornithology of the Indians of Texas Birds were used for a variety of purposes by Native Americans and archeological investigations have identified forty species from Texas studies. The uses of birds varied among specific tribes, but it seems clear that Native Americans did not seriously impact the incredible numbers of aves present at the time. 24 pages with 6 line drawings $5.00 (TOS members), $7.00 (non-members) price includes postage and handling To order these publications please send a check (payable to TOS) to: Jack C.
