Panama 2027: The Darien

SAVE THE DATE!

Dr. Sue Heath will lead this exciting trip to the Darién area of Panama. This is a new area of that country for TOS and many new species are likely to be seen, with the highlight being the possibility of seeing the incredible HARPY EAGLE! The Darién area of Panama has the highest concentration of this magnificent species in Central America so, the odds are in our favor.
On the first night of the tour, accommodations will be at either the Riande Aeropuerto Hotel or the Crowne Plaza Panama Airport Hotel in Panama City. Our guide will meet you bright and early around 6:30 a.m. in the hotel lobby the next morning to head to the Canopy Camp, where we will stay for the following six nights.
This is an all-inclusive tour with an active itinerary. Daily morning and afternoon guided birding trips are included for the full duration of your Panama wildlife tour. We finish the trip early in Panama City on the afternoon of the last day. (Since the tour ends in the afternoon of the last day, people might need to stay at the airport hotel that night if they can't get a flight out in the late afternoon.)
The list of possible species is very extensive, but a few of the target species are:
Harpy, Crested and Ornate Hawk Eagle, Black-collared and Small Hawk, King Vulture, a large assortment of hummingbird species, many species of antwrens, macaws, flycatchers, Kingfishers and herons, Yellow-throated and Keel-billed Toucans, Striped and Little Cuckoo, Black-tailed Trogon, Great Green Macaw, and many, many others!
The locations listed below are some of the possible areas we will be birding:
Canopy Camp grounds & Nando's Trail; Darién National Park; Bayano Lake Area & Torti Area; Pan-American Highway; Tierra Nueva Foundation; Las Lagunas Road (Aguas Calientes) & Aruza Lagoons; Quebrada Felix; Lajas Blancas; Nuevo Vigia; Aligandi and El Salto Road.
Registration will open in late 2026 or very early 2027 and will be limited to 10 participants. Keep an eye out for updates on social media, our website and the TOS News.
