Georgina Schwartz Remembrances

Many people knew and loved Georgina Schwartz.

Georgina was one of the coolest people I ever met! I met Georgina at the TOS meeting in San Antonio, I think it might have been 2006?  The last time I saw her was when we were on the Hueco Tanks field trip during the TOS meeting in El Paso, in 2015.  At times she would sit and take a break and I would join her; it was a chance for us to chat.  Gosh, we had fun that day!

Georgina and I kept in touch, even after my family and I moved west.  At the end of February, I had sent her a video of the Sandhill Cranes that were flying low over our house that day.  She replied, “Thanks, what a miracle that allowed me to hear them!”  I felt happy that she could hear them.

I have written to her several times since February, but hadn’t heard back from her.  I was beginning to worry, so I appreciate you posting the sad news, David.

Georginia is a role model for me.  As I said, really cool.  I’m going to miss her.

It's been posted other places, but Georgina Schwartz (San Antonio) passed way today I understand at 95.

I was privileged to have appointed her to the TOS board, back in 2005, I think. She was always the best of foils when she was on the board, calling me out on ideas she thought were bad for birds and birders. Even after she left the board, she would bend my ear about TOS to communicate to the board when I was still a member. Georgina was, to quote John Lewis, always "Good Trouble" to have around.

My wife was just reminding me that when she was at a TOS meeting and went on a field trip with Georgina when Georgina was maybe "just 80," she wore Donna out on the field trip. Georgina had that kind of energy.

I felt lucky then and even luckier now to have got to see her at the last presentation
I did in San Antoinio for my book last fall. She even made it out in person, and I felt
it a great honor that she made that effort to see my program.

It is not an exaggeration to say I will think of her at every TOS meeting I attend.

Sorry to learn of Georgina’s passing. She was a wonderful TOS member who thoroughly enjoyed both the camaraderie and the birding associated with TOS.  She was quite a lady.
