Past TOS President Sue Wiedenfeld Has Died

Sue Redden Wiedenfeld passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2026 in Boerne, Texas.  She was born on July 26, 1931 in Fort Worth, Texas, to parents Edward N. and Dorothy Redden.

Sue was a teenager when her family moved from Houston to Comfort.  She was most at home enjoying the outdoors and fostering her love of nature in the Texas Hill Country.

In 1949, Sue married the boy next door, Egon Wiedenfeld.  Sue and Egon raised five sons at their family ranch outside Comfort.

During their early marriage Sue helped manage the family place and livestock (chickens and goats included). Once their youngest son entered school, Sue began her career in the Comfort ISD Tax Office. She later served as Kendall County’s first Chief Tax Appraiser where she established the tax office and held this position until her retirement in the early 1990s.  She also served as a substitute school bus driver and an EMT during the inaugural training programs.

Sue was an avid birdwatcher and a member of National Audubon Society.  During retirement, Sue and Egon traveled and focused on compiling their world bird lists.  She generously shared her 70+ years of birding experience by hosting groups at her home to view the hummingbirds that would gather at the numerous feeders. It was estimated that she fed several thousand hummingbirds. Sue led annual Christmas Bird Counts throughout the Hill Country and South Texas for decades while leading counts and bird list compilations for conservation efforts throughout Texas.  Sue taught birding workshops and served in leadership positions with Texas Ornithological Society and other nature groups.  Sue’s phone often rang with birders seeking clarification or verification on a rare or unusual bird sighting.

Sue was an advocate for restoring and maintaining natural landscapes and native plant species. She took great pride in re-introducing and nurturing native plants to her home place while she shared her love and appreciation of nature with her sons and grandchildren.

When Sue and Egon were not on the road chasing the next bird, they enjoyed playing Skat (a German-language card game) with their friends.  Sue was a long-time member of Gaddis United Methodist Church.

Sue was preceded by her husband, Egon E. Wiedenfeld and their son Dennis; parents, Edward N. & Dorothy Redden; brother, John & wife Jo Lochte Redden along with her brother-in-law Herman Wiedenfeld and wife Mary.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Charlie and Sharon Wiedenfeld, Jerry and Terri Wiedenfeld, Dale and Diane Wiedenfeld, Jonny and Sondra Wiedenfeld, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  Sue is also survived by sister-in-law Iris Wiedenfeld (husband Clarence deceased).

Visitation and services to be held Monday, June 22 at Gaddis United Methodist Church.  Visitation begins at 10 a.m. and Celebration of Lifbegins atns 11 a.m.  Graveside prayers will follow at Comfort Cemetery.
